Ed Memmott was promoted to City Manager in 2009 after previously serving as Assistant City Manager and Community Development Director in a career in Spartanburg that began in 1997. In five years as Assistant City Manager, Memmott was responsible for Economic and Community Development, Engineering, Planning, Public Works, and Building Inspections.
Memmott's career in Spartanburg has been marked by leadership roles on a number of the most ambitious downtown and neighborhood revitalization projects in the City's history, including the relocation of the corporate headquarters for Advance America, Extended Stay America, and QS/1 Data Systems, as well as the development of the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, South Church Plaza, USC Upstate College of Business and Economics, Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the redevelopment of C.C. Woodson Recreation Center.
Memmott is a cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he received a B.A. in History and International Studies and a Master's in Public Administration. His wife, Julie, is a teacher at the Spartanburg High School Freshman Academy. The Memmotts have two sons, Corey, a 2010 graduate of Wofford College who works in banking, and Andrew, a sophmore at Wofford.
