Spartanburg County Public Libraries

 

With a staff of around 200, the Spartanburg County Public Libraries offer 10 full-service local libraries and a Bookmobile. Each location provides a variety of programming for children, tweens, teens and adults and is equipped with meeting room facilities, free internet access and shelves full of books, magazines, movies, music and more. For those who are not able to come in to a library, Homebound Services delivers books to shut-ins almost every day. Additionally many downloadable books and resources such as our newest streaming services are available on our website. Also visit the Libraries on our social networking sites: Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest and Flickr.

What was once an old Nash Rambler car dealership is now the front line of creative culture in downtown Spartanburg, SC. HUB-BUB offers more than 100 nights of art, culture, and entertainment a year in The Showroom Gallery and Performance Hall. Hub City Writers Project  

Hub City Writers Project

 

In May 1995 a trio of writers in Spartanburg, SC, began to talk in a downtown coffee shop about how they could help preserve a sense of place in their rapidly changing Southern city. Hub City Press is a non-profit independent press in Spartanburg, SC that publishes well-crafted, high-quality works by new and established authors, with an emphasis on the Southern experience. They are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the South Carolina Arts Commission, and others.

Featuring glass walls on two sides, the Milliken Arts Gallery provides a wonderful exhibit space with unique visual access to exhibitions 24-hours a day. During much of the year, the gallery is filled by the work of a wide variety of professional artists. Formally the West Main Baptist Church, renovations transformed the empty and nearly forgotten landmark into a showcase of artists for the state to see. The church was purchased in the fall of 2009 with the great notion of providing affordable work spaces for local artists and it is now the only studio art co-op in Spartanburg County.

In 1996, a group of community volunteers and organizations began working on a plan to revitalize the rural town of Chesnee, South Carolina. The facility houses a 2,000 square foot gallery space for exhibiting new works by emerging and established artists and craftspeople of all disciplines. To date, the Artisan Center has attracted people from over 34 states and 10 foreign countries and has been featured in Southern Living Magazine, Spartanburg Magazine, and many other local newspapers and magazines.

The Spartanburg County Historical Association was formed thanks to a small group of historically-minded Spartanburg County citizens in September 1957. The mission of the Spartanburg County Historical Association is to explore and preserve our region’s history by collecting and sharing the stories of the people who shaped that history by: engaging visitors in unique living history programs and events in the city and county of Spartanburg; inspiring learners of all ages to investigate the history that begins in their own backyard at our historic sites and regional museum; and involving the community in the preservation of our shared past.

The second oldest program in South Carolina, the Youth Theatre performs in the David Reid Theatre at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC. They present four productions each October – May season, using young actors and actresses, with three public performances and two days of school-time performances of each show. More than 12,000 Spartanburg County students attend the Youth Theatre annually. In addition, the Youth Theatre’s professional staff teaches a variety of classes for students in grades K-12.
